Why rest days are crucial in high-altitude trekking

Rest days during high-altitude trekking are one of the most important elements of safe and informed mountain travel. Although many novice trekkers regard them as a „waste of time”, in reality it is precisely these days that determine the success of the expedition — both in terms of health and physical performance.

The body needs time to adapt to the gradual decrease in oxygen levels. Without this, no amount of training, fitness or experience will prevent you from suffering the serious effects of altitude sickness. That is why well-planned rest days during high-altitude trekking are the cornerstone of safe ascent.

What happens to the body during high-altitude trekking?

At altitudes above 2,500–3,000 metres, atmospheric pressure drops, which means you take in less oxygen with every breath. Your heart starts to beat faster, your breathing becomes deeper, and your body enters a state of intense adaptation.

However, this is a process that cannot be rushed — the body needs time.

Changes occurring during acclimatisation to altitude:

  • increased production of red blood cells
  • increased lung ventilation
  • vascular adaptation
  • blood pressure control
  • improvement in aerobic metabolism
  • muscle and mitochondrial remodelling

That is precisely why rest days are so important when trekking in the high mountains — they allow the body to adapt to the changes.

Why are rest days compulsory?

1. They prevent the symptoms of AMS from getting worse

Altitude sickness (AMS) is the most common problem encountered in the mountains. Its symptoms include:

  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • nausea
  • sleep problems
  • dizziness
  • sudden tiredness

AMS usually sets in 6–12 hours after reaching a new altitude. A rest day allows physiological processes to stabilise and halts the progression of symptoms before they develop into HAPE or HACE.

2. They enable you to follow the „climb high, sleep low” principle”

This is a key rule for acclimatisation:
Go higher up during the day, but sleep at the same altitude.

Days off are the perfect time to:

  • climb 300–500 metres higher,
  • go on a short acclimatisation hike,
  • return to a safe altitude for the night.

As a result, the body learns to tolerate higher levels of oxygen deprivation.

3. They reduce the risk of HAPE and HACE

High-altitude pulmonary oedema (HAPE) and high-altitude cerebral oedema (HACE) are the most dangerous consequences of ascending too quickly.

They are the result of:

  • excessive pressure in the pulmonary vessels,
  • disorders affecting blood flow in the brain,
  • tissue hypoxia.

Pushing yourself too hard → increased risk of oedema. Rest days during high-altitude trekking act as a safety brake.

4. They build up your fitness for the next stages

Paradoxically, rest improves your fitness.

Thanks to the rest days:

  • sleep quality improves
  • the heart rate is stabilising
  • energy levels are rising
  • the muscles recover
  • the trekking pace is picking up

In practice, people who acclimatise walk faster and with greater ease in the mountains than those who try to „push on without breaks”.

5. They increase the chances of the expedition’s success

The statistics are clear:

  • no acclimatisation days = high evacuation rate
  • the inclusion of acclimatisation days = a high chance of success

It works just the same on the EBC, Manaslu, Annapurna and Langtang as it does on Kilimanjaro.

What do proper rest days look like when trekking in the high mountains?

This is NOT:

  • lying in bed all day
  • catching up on sleep
  • sitting in a room

This is active rest — the most effective way to acclimatise.

Key elements of a good acclimatisation day

1. „Active rest”: movement, not inactivity

Ideally, a 2–4-hour leisurely trek to a point above your overnight accommodation.

2. Acclimatisation micro-treks

Example for the ECB (Namche):

  • Trekking to the Everest View Hotel (3,800 m)
  • Return to Namche (3,440 m) for the night

Example for the Manaslu Circuit (Samagaun):

  • Trekking to Birendra Lake
  • Optional trek to Manaslu Base Camp
  • Back to Samagaun for the night

3. Plenty of fluids

Water + electrolytes = faster recovery.

4. High-calorie meals

At high altitudes, the body burns more calories — from 3,000 kcal upwards.

5. Mental rest

Relaxation, a book, music, conversation — no pressure, no adrenaline.

How often should you take rest days?

It depends on the altitude and the route, but the general principles remain the same.

Above 3,000 m:
➡️ A rest day for every 800–1,000 metres of elevation gain

On routes above 5,000 m:
➡️ Additional acclimatisation days if AMA symptoms occur

Examples:

  • Everest Base Camp: Namche and Dingboche
  • Manaslu Circuit: Samagaun and Samdo
  • Annapurna Circuit: Manang
  • Langtang Valley: Kyanjin Gompa

The most common misconceptions about rest days

  • skipping the acclimatisation day because „I feel fine”
  • too fast a pace
  • sleeping at a higher altitude after a strenuous climb
  • inadequate hydration
  • alcohol or heavy food
  • downplaying a headache
  • lack of knowledge about AMS, HAPE and HACE

Each of these errors increases the risk of serious complications.

Rest days during high-altitude trekking are a key factor in the safety and success of any expedition. They give the body time to adapt to the lack of oxygen, and the risk of altitude sickness is drastically reduced.

It is these days that determine the success of the whole expedition — they allow you to climb higher, feel good and fully enjoy the views of the Himalayas. At high altitude, strength does not come from pace. Strength comes from acclimatisation.
