An expedition combining a trek to Everest Base Camp with the ascent of one of the world’s most popular trekking peaks

Island Peak, officially known as Imja Tse, is much more than just a peak. It is a gateway to the world of high-altitude mountaineering, a place where dreams of the Himalayas become reality. Our 20-day expedition combines a classic trek through the legendary Khumbu Valley with a technical ascent of this spectacular peak, standing at an altitude of 6,165 metres.

 

Why Island Peak?

It is one of the most accessible six-thousanders in the world, yet at the same time a true Himalayan challenge. During the expedition, you will not only conquer your first – or another – Himalayan peak, but you will also reach Everest Base Camp, stand on Kala Patthar with a view of the world’s highest mountains, and cross the spectacular Kongma La pass. This approach route is the perfect acclimatisation trail and a unique experience in its own right.

The summit of Island Peak offers one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas – Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Ama Dablam and Nuptse in all their splendour, just like in a perfect photograph. It’s a sight that stays with you for a lifetime.

What makes this trip special?

  • A technical challenge for the ambitious
    • Island Peak is what is known as a. Trekking Peak according to the NMA classification, but this expedition should not be confused with trekking alone. Island Peak is a peak with real character – you’ll be using crampons and an ice axe, traversing a glacier in a harness, and tackling a steep snow and ice section with a gradient of 40–50°. It is an excellent training ground for high-altitude climbing, which will prepare you for future challenges or serve as a rewarding and ambitious challenge in its own right.
  • The magical places of the Khumbu Valley
    • The acclimatisation trek to Everest Base Camp is a Himalayan classic. You’ll walk through Namche Bazaar – the bustling capital of the Sherpas, which you’ll visit Tyangboche Monastery with its spiritual atmosphere, you will find yourself in Base camp at the foot of Everest where legendary expeditions begin, and you’ll be able to admire the sunrise (and perhaps even the sunset), with Kala Patthar – a viewing point that takes your breath away.
  • An authentic encounter with Himalayan culture
    • It’s not just about the mountains – it’s also about the people. Although the route you’ll be hiking is one of the most popular treks in the world, you’ll discover the undeniable charms of this place. The hospitality of the Sherpas, their traditions and their way of life in challenging conditions. You’ll spend the night in local mountain huts, enjoy meals prepared by the mountain folk, and experience Nepalese culture.

The Course of the Expedition

  • Flight to Lukla: Our expedition will begin with an exciting flight to Lukla, from where we’ll set off full of enthusiasm for Island Peak. The itinerary has been carefully planned to ensure participants have sufficient time to acclimatise and ease smoothly into the rhythm of the climbing trek.
  • Acclimatisation trek before reaching the summit
  • Climbing Island Peak with the support of a professional team! Only tried-and-tested, licensed high-altitude guides who are permanent members of our team
  • Sightseeing in Kathmandu: If you’d like, you can also explore Nepal’s capital and its surroundings by visiting UNESCO World Heritage Sites such as Pashupatinath, Nepal’s largest Hindu temple, the Boudhanath stupa or the central Durbar Square. Relax in the city’s tourist district – Thamel – where you’ll experience Kathmandu’s unique atmosphere.

Our an expedition to Island Peak This trip is designed for people in very good physical condition, ideally with experience of high-altitude mountaineering, although this is not essential. If you want to experience both trekking and climbing a trekking peak, this expedition is ideal for you.

Detailed programme

  • Day 1 – Welcome to Nepal
  • Day 2 – Preparing for our mountain adventure and travelling to Ramechap, to Manthali Airport, from where we’ll set off for Lukla the following day.
  • Day 3 – The start of the mountain adventure. Flight to Lukla. Trek to Phading (2,610 m), a trek of around 4 hours.
  • Day 4 – Trek to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), about 7 hours’ walk.
  • Day 5 – Active acclimatisation in the Namche Bazaar area.
  • Day 6 – Trek from Namche to Tengboche (3,860 m), duration approximately 6 hours.
  • Day 7 – Trekking from Tengboche to Pheriche (4,240 m), a hike of around 6 hours.
  • Day 8 – From Pheriche to Lobuche (4,910 m). A trek of around 6 hours.
  • Day 9 – Trek from Lobuche to Gorakshem (5,170 m); after a rest and a meal, trek to Everest Base Camp; return to Gorakshem in the afternoon. Overnight stay. Total walking time: approximately 8 hours.
  • Day 10 – Hike up to Kalapatthar (5,600 m) to watch the sunrise. Then return to Lobuche. About 8 hours in total.
  • Day 11 – From Lobuche village via the Kongma La pass (5,535 m), trek to Chhukung (4,730 m). The trek takes about 7 hours in total.
  • Day 12 – Chukung to the base camp at Island Peak (5,120 m). A trek of around 4 hours.
  • Day 13 – An active rest day, preparation for the summit push, and a refresher session on mountain safety rules and how to use the equipment.
  • Day 14 – Ascent of Island Peak (6,165 m). The highlight of the trip. We’ll set off at night, reach the summit, and return to base camp after around 11–12 hours.
  • Day 15 – We’re setting off on the return journey from the Island Peak base camp. Today we’re heading to Pangboche (3,930 m); it’ll be an easy trek, taking around 6 hours.
  • Day 16 – A trek from Pangboche via Phortse to Namche Bazaar. About 7 hours in total.
  • Day 17 – From Namche, we’ll trek straight to Lukla. In the evening, we’ll celebrate our achievements!
  • Day 18 – Morning flight from Lukla to Ramechap, transfer to Kathmandu, rest.
  • Day 19 – A spare day. Optional sightseeing in Kathmandu (we recommend a full-day itinerary)
  • Day 20 – Time to say goodbye. Departure from Nepal.
