About the expedition

The Mera Peak expedition and the Ampu Laptsa traverse – a true Himalayan expedition

A trip to Mera Peak (6,470 m) combined with a passageway Ampu Laptsa Pass (5,845 m) This is one of the most spectacular high-altitude adventures in Nepal. The route combines the ascent of Nepal’s highest trekking peak with the crossing of one of the most demanding, technically challenging passes in the Himalayas.

During this 22-day trek, we’ll traverse the wild Hinku Valley, climb Mera Peak and cross the Ampu Laptsa Pass – a place that, for many participants, is the highlight of the entire trek and a real challenge. At the summit of Mera Peak, one of the most beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas awaits. In good weather, you’ll see as far as five eight-thousanders: Mount Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, Cho Oyu and Kangchenjunga. It is one of the few spots in the Himalayas from which you can see so many of the world’s highest mountains at the same time.

Why choose Mera Peak in combination with the Ampu Laptsa Pass?

Two major goals in a single trip

Unlike the classic Mera Peak programme, this expedition also includes a trek the technical section of the Ampu Laptsa Pass. This gives the trip a genuine expedition-style feel.

The wild part of the Himalayas

A large part of the route runs through the remote Hinku Valley, where we come across far fewer trekking groups than in the popular areas around Everest.

The most beautiful panoramic views of the Himalayas

With views of glaciers, eight-thousanders and wild valleys, this route is considered one of the most spectacular in Nepal.

A real high-altitude adventure

Ampu Laptsa requires the use of climbing equipment – crampons, a harness and rope techniques. It is an experience that offers immense satisfaction and a real sense of being on an expedition; furthermore, the pass is situated in an area far removed from tourist traffic, providing the experience of a truly wild mountain expedition.

Expedition safety – collaboration with MedEverest

Expeditions above 6,000 metres require appropriate, very good physical and health preparation. That is why we organise all our expeditions above 6,000 metres in collaboration with MedEverest – a high-altitude medicine team led by Dr Robert Szymczak, MD, PhD, one of the best (if not the best) specialists in high-altitude medicine in Poland.

Every participant in the Mera Peak + Ampu Laptsa expedition is covered by The MedEverest Telemedicine Starter Pack, which includes:

  • analysis of the pre-departure health assessment
  • Recommendations on screening and vaccination
  • recommendations on the prevention of altitude sickness
  • an acclimatisation plan tailored to the expedition route, taking previous experience into account
  • access to the professional online training course „High-Altitude First Aid”
  • the option of medical teleconsultations with a doctor whilst on the expedition itself
  • a medical consultation on your return

Furthermore, and very importantly, our Nepalese guides have been trained in High-altitude medicine by Dr Robert Szymczak, PhD, which enhances the team’s safety during the expedition.

At Meroway, safety isn’t just an add-on to the programme – is its foundation and we take them extremely seriously.

Why you should go to the Himalayas with Meroway

  • We are a Polish tour operator, but we also have our own licensed mountaineering agency in Nepal; this means that we are responsible for the expedition from start to finish and have direct control over every aspect of it – and we do not outsource it to a Nepalese agency
  • We organise small groups to ensure greater safety and comfort – on treks to mountain peaks, there is a limit of 12 participants per group
  • Experienced Himalayan guides – our team consists primarily of experienced professional guides from Meroway’s permanent team, mainly Sherpas, some of whom also hold international qualifications
  • a well-thought-out and tried-and-tested acclimatisation strategy – developed in consultation with Dr Szymczak, but above all based on many years of experience and testing various versions of the programme – the expedition programme has been tested by us on numerous occasions
  • Direct organisation of the trip with no intermediaries – the trip is organised by Meroway from start to finish

This means you can focus fully on achieving your goal and enjoying one of the greatest adventures in the Himalayas.

Is this trip right for you?

The expedition Mera Peak + Ampu Laptsa will be suitable for people who:

  • want to climb their first or next 6,000-metre peak
  • have trekking experience at altitudes above 4,000 metres
  • have basic skills in using crampons and an ice axe, and are familiar with the basics of rope techniques
  • want to try a more expedition-style form of trekking in the Himalayas and are up for a challenging adventure
  • They are in very good physical condition and have strong mental resilience
  • are in good health and have no medical contraindications
  • are prepared for limited comfort, changeable conditions and the rigours of the expedition

This isn’t trekking – it’s high-altitude expedition with elements of an expedition-style adventure, which requires excellent physical fitness and the right level of motivation.

Combine two exceptional mountain destinations in a single trip!

  • The combination of two legendary goals:
    • Mera Peak (6,470 m) It is the highest trekking peak in Nepal, regarded as one of the best „to start with” for those who are just beginning their adventure in Himalayan mountaineering and want to try their hand at an expedition more challenging than trekking alone, whilst tackling a seriously substantial altitude! An expedition to Mera Peak is an exciting challenge in its own right, one that will stay with you for a lifetime, but that’s not all – we suggest adding one more goal to this
    • Crossing Ampu Laptsa (5,845 m) Although it is lower in altitude than the summit of Mera Peak, it is a much greater challenge, regarded as one of the most difficult crossings in the Himalayas at this altitude. It is a unique adventure that not only offers unforgettable views but also provides an excellent test of mountaineering skills.

  • Acclimatisation and preparation: The ascent of Mera Peak is physically demanding, mainly due to the high altitude. Technically, however, it does not present any difficulties, so a basic knowledge of mountaineering is sufficient; we also provide refresher/basic training for beginners. The gradient rarely exceeds 40 degrees. The expedition has been planned with gradual acclimatisation in mind to maximise your chances of success. Before we begin the actual mountain climb, we’ll undertake an acclimatisation trek to help prepare your body for the ascent. We have extensive experience in this field; our team does not include any unqualified guides. Every leader guiding on Mera has previously climbed many other high-altitude peaks, and the natural aptitude of our high-altitude guides guarantees your comfort and safety. This is very important at high altitudes.
  • By the time you cross the pass, you will already be well acclimatised, but you may also be tired after summiting Mera Peak. We will proceed carefully and prudently. Our team consists of professionals who have been working in the Himalayas for many years and know the region inside out. Because every expedition is organised with meticulous attention to detail, participants can be confident that our experience and expertise guarantee them maximum safety and the best chance of success.
