In the Footsteps of the Buddha: Discover Places Associated with Buddhism in Nepal

In the footsteps of Buddha This is a journey that will take you to the roots of Buddhism, combining spiritual discoveries with Nepal’s fascinating attractions. Begin your adventure in Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, and then discover Lumbini, the birthplace of the Buddha. Our tour will allow you to delve into Buddhist spirituality, learn about unique traditions and experience Nepal’s rich culture.

Lumbini: The Cradle of Buddhism

Lumbini, the birthplace of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Shakyamuni Buddha, is situated to the south of Kathmandu. He was born there in 560 BC, and according to Buddhist sutras, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to him whilst travelling. Lumbini has been a centre of pilgrimage since the 3rd century BC, and in 1997 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2013, traces of the oldest Buddhist temple, dating from the 6th century BC, were discovered there, standing on the site of the Buddha’s birth.

Kathmandu: The Spiritual and Cultural Capital of Nepal

During our trip, you’ll also visit The Kathmandu Valley, full of historic monuments and spiritual sites:

  • Boudhanath: This is a Buddhist sanctuary housing the world’s most famous Buddhist stupa. It is one of the most important destinations for Buddhist pilgrims.
  • Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple): This temple offers a breathtaking view of the Kathmandu Valley. It is also a place steeped in Buddhist symbolism.
  • Pashupatinath: The largest Hindu temple in Nepal, the complex of which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Durbar Square: Royal Square, which forms the heart of historic Kathmandu and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Thamel: A bustling district of Kathmandu, ideal for buying souvenirs, local produce and cashmere scarves, and for sampling Nepalese cuisine in its many restaurants and cafés.

Lumbini and Nagarkot: Spirituality and Nature

After exploring Kathmandu, you will head to Lumbini, where you can meditate in a beautiful garden and discover the origins of Buddhism. On your return to Kathmandu, you’ll watch the sunrise from the hills Nagarkot, and you’ll also visit Bhaktapur, the former capital of Nepal.

Our „In the Footsteps of the Buddha” tour is an excellent opportunity to explore Buddhist spirituality whilst enjoying the beauty of Nepal’s natural landscapes and architecture. If you’d like to add some trekking to your trip, we recommend the Annapurna Sunrise Trek or the Mardi Himal Trek.
