Makalu (8,463 m) It is the fifth-highest peak on Earth and one of the most majestic eight-thousanders in the Himalayas. Its distinctive pyramidal silhouette, sharp ridges and the rugged, remote region Makalu-Barun National Park make Makalu the dream destination for many experienced climbers.

At Meroway Adventure, we organise an expedition that combines a rewarding trek through one of Nepal’s wildest valleys with a challenging climbing phase of the highest standard. This expedition is for those who wish to take the next step in their mountaineering development and conquer one of the most respected – and demanding – eight-thousanders.

The Makalu expedition – how does it work?

Our expedition has been planned on the basis of the experience of the Nepalese Meroway guides and their practical knowledge of the region.

1. Kathmandu – preparations and check-ina

equipment check, team briefings, debriefings and formalities.

2. Flight to Tumlingtar and transfer to the starting point of the trek

The start of the journey through the green landscapes of the Arun Valley.

3. Trek to Makalu Base Camp

Around 9–10 days’ trek through some of Nepal’s most varied landscapes:

  • subtropical forests,
  • terraced fields and mountain villages,
  • steep mountain passes,
  • the glaciers of the Barun region.

The trek ends in Makalu Base Camp (approx. 4,780 m), where the climbing section begins.

4. Acclimatisation and altitude rotations

Gradual ascents to higher-altitude camps — essential for a safe ascent of an eight-thousander.

5. Climbing Makalu

Makalu is a technical eight-thousander, offering:

  • steep sections of snow and ice,
  • work on handrails,
  • numerous crossings across the glacier,
  • exposure and highly variable weather conditions,
  • challenging, long approaches.

The summit push depends on the conditions and the weather window — we work at the team’s optimal pace and in accordance with safety guidelines.

6. Descent and return trek

Return via the same route, with the final leg to Kathmandu.

  • Dzień 6 – Seduwa → Tashigaon (2065 m)
  • Dzień 7 – Tashigaon → Khongma Danda (3560 m)
  • Dzień 8 – Dzień aklimatyzacyjny w Khongma
  • Dzień 9 – Khongma → Mumbuk (3550 m). Przejście przez słynną przełęcz Shipton La.
  • Dzień 10 – Mumbuk → Yangri Kharka (3610 m)
  • Dzień 11 – Yangri Kharka → Langmale Kharka (4410 m)
  • Dzień 12 – Langmale Kharka → Makalu Base Camp (4870 m)

  • Dzień 22 – Zejście do ABC/ BC

  • Accommodation and flights

    • Airport transfers in Kathmandu (arrival and departure) with assistance from the team.

    • 4 nights’ accommodation at a 3★ hotel in Kathmandu (BB – breakfast included).

    • Flights from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar and back to Kathmandu for participants and guides.

    Accommodation and meals during trekking and mountaineering expeditions

    • A fully equipped infrastructure Makalu Advanced Base Camp:
      accommodation tents, men’s facilities, kitchen, toilets, shower, charging points.

    • During the trek:
      3 meals a day (breakfast/lunch/dinner + tea/coffee)
      and accommodation in lodges/tea houses.

    • In ABC:
      3 freshly cooked meals a day prepared by a professional chef.

    • At high-altitude camps (C1–C4): high-calorie expedition food.

    • Trekking luggage allowance: 40–45 kg per participant (transport to and from ABC).

    Permits, fees and formalities

    • Permits for Makalu-Barun National Park and local planning permission.

    • Government fees, permits and expedition royalty on the classic route up Makalu (8,463 m).

    • Official Liaison Officer appointed by the Government of Nepal (with all costs borne by the organiser).

    • Government taxes and organisational fees.

    The team and dispatch staff

    • Experienced, licensed private Sherpa – a high-altitude guide on a one-to-one basis
      (one mountain guide per participant).

    • Kitchen team, logistics staff and personnel at Base Camp/ABC.

    • Comprehensive medical, accident and equipment insurance for Sherpas and all staff.

    Expedition equipment and supplies

    • High-altitude tents for participants and Sherpas at C1, C2, C3 and C4.

    • At ABC: individual box tents.

    • Cookers, gas, fuel, heaters, generators, solar panels and lighting systems.

    • A complete set of team equipment for belaying and route-setting:
      rope, ice screws, snow anchors, additional equipment.

    • Fees for participation in the scheme rope fixing for path-finding teams.

    Oxygen and safety

    • 6 oxygen cylinders (4L) per participant + Sherpa
      – 4 cylinders per participant, 2 for the Sherpa (masks and regulators included).

    • Spare oxygen, a mask and a regulator for medical use at Base Camp.

    • Satellite phone for use in emergencies
      (call charges: 5 USD/min).

    • First-aid kits at ABC and with the support team.

    • First-aid kits for participants and staff.

    • Insurance for the duration of the trek
