A high-altitude expedition in the heart of the Himalayas
Baruntse (7,129 m) It is one of the most logical and worthwhile goals for ambitious mountaineers who wish to progress from trekking on six-thousand-metre peaks to serious expedition climbing.
Situated between Everest, Lhotse and Makalu, it offers a technical yet predictable route which, with proper acclimatisation and professional organisation, provides a realistic chance of summiting a seven-thousander in the style of a classic Himalayan expedition. This is an expedition for those who are aware of the challenges posed by high altitude and are prepared for some real hard work on the mountain.
This is a mountain that offers a taste of the world’s greatest challenges. It is ideal for those who dream of climbing eight-thousanders but want first to test themselves at a high level – in conditions that teach humility, perseverance and teamwork.
Why Baruntse?
- A natural step in mountaineering development
- Baruntse is an excellent transition between popular six-thousanders and more demanding peaks. It teaches you how to function in high-altitude camps, work with guide ropes and manage your energy above 7,000 metres.
- A technical but accessible mountain
- Steep snow and ice sections, using crampons, navigating glacial terrain — all as part of a classic route, without any extremely unpredictable difficulties.
- A well-planned acclimatisation programme
- The programme involves a gradual increase in altitude and acclimatisation rotations, which enhance safety and the chances of success.
- An intimate band
- Small groups mean greater control, a personalised approach and practical support at every stage of the trip.
The nature of the expedition
- Type of activity: high-altitude expedition
- Duration: 25–30 days (depending on the version chosen)
- Maximum height: 7,129 m
- Difficulty: moderate in terms of technical difficulty (ice and snow terrain, rope work; requires excellent physical fitness and high-altitude experience)
- Accommodation: a 3-star hotel in Kathmandu, mountain huts during the trek, tents at base camp and high-altitude camps
- Transport: flight to/from Lukla, private ground transport

Expedition plan – outline
We set off from Kathmandu, and after a few days of acclimatisation trekking through the Hinku Valley and over the spectacular Zatra-La pass, we reach Mera Peak, which we climb as part of our preparation for high altitudes. In line with best practice, this is acclimatisation on a less demanding peak. Next, through the harsh, high-altitude wilderness, we reach the base camp at Baruntse. There, we rest, plan our summit push, and when conditions are right – we set off for the summit. We’ll face ice climbing, rock faces, high-altitude camps and, finally, the reward: the view from the summit at 7,129 metres above sea level.
Ending options – decide for yourself how to bring your adventure to a close:
🔹 27-day version: once we’ve reached the summit, we’ll head back by helicopter to Lukla – a comfortable, quick way to round off the expedition. If you’re in excellent shape and know you acclimatise well, the 25-day option is worth considering! (in which case, without Mera Peak)
🔹 Extended version (~30 days): choose the return trek – more nature, more time for reflection, more time to soak up the Himalayas.
Medical care and altitude acclimatisation – included in the price
As part of the Baruntse expedition, every participant is covered by the professional MedEverest telemedicine package – at no extra cost. This is a feature that genuinely enhances safety and comfort whilst preparing for a high-altitude expedition.
The package includes:
- an analysis of the medical history and test results in the context of the planned amount
- Recommendations for medical checks and vaccinations before travelling
- an assessment of the risks associated with altitude and personalised acclimatisation advice
- recommendations on the contents of a first-aid kit for expeditions, including any prescriptions
- access to the online training course „High-Altitude First Aid”
- the option of telemedicine consultations during the expedition
- a consultation following the completion of the shipment
This means you’re even better prepared, and can act more consciously and responsibly.
Security as a system
Our approach to security is based on four pillars:
- Dual organisational structure
- We operate as a Polish tour operator and a licensed Nepalese mountaineering agency. This means we have legal protection in Poland and full operational control in Nepal.
- Experienced guides and Sherpas
- A permanent high-altitude team, familiar with the route and the specific conditions of the region.
- Insurance and evacuation procedures
- Comprehensive travel insurance (cover of EUR 150,000, third-party liability and personal accident cover) and the organisation of evacuation if necessary.
- Controlled acclimatisation
- A plan based on experience from previous seasons, adapted to the conditions and developed in consultation with an expert in high-altitude medicine, Dr Robert Szymczak, and MedEverest
Why choose a trip with Meroway?
- Full support from the guides – experienced leaders and Sherpas who know the summit first-hand! <br>
- You can choose the plan that best suits your needs; we’re here to advise you – 25-, 27- and 30-day options are available.
- Safe acclimatisation – a tried-and-tested programme, highly recommended by Mera Peak, which maximises your chances of reaching the summit; however, other options are also available, with each version offering a very good acclimatisation plan
- The highest standards in logistics – as the only agency in the world that is both a Polish tour operator and a Nepalese agency, we have our own facilities, organise the expedition ourselves, are not dependent on anyone, and have direct influence over all decisions and the entire organisation
- Professional pre-departure medical preparation – we are one of the very few agencies to include the full MedEverest telemedicine package in the price of the expedition.
- High-altitude guides accompany you throughout the entire journey Meroway guides, not just any Sherpas
- Small groups and a personalised approach – the trip is guaranteed to go ahead with as few as two participants
- Good High-altitude insurance, handling of all permits, summit certificate
Who is this trip for?
- For those with experience of high mountains and who are in very good physical condition.
- Ideally, you’ve previously climbed a high-altitude trekking peak, such as Island Peak, Lobuche Peak or Elbrus and Kazbek
- For those with climbing skills (they do not need to be advanced, but a basic knowledge of mountaineering is required)
- For those who dream of climbing eight-thousanders – this is the perfect stepping stone before tackling Everest, Makalu or Manaslu
- For those looking for a real challenge and an unforgettable adventure
- For those with the right mindset and strength – not only physical but also mental – who are prepared for the potential challenges inherent in high-altitude expeditions
Baruntse (7,129 m) is one of the most logical steps between trekking routes on six-thousand-metre peaks and challenging seven-thousand-metre peaks. It is technically demanding, but predictable and safe with proper acclimatisation.
It’s a trip you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
Ready? Your summit awaits.
