Trekking in the Himalayas - practical tips
Learn practical tips for those planning to trek in the Himalayas - for beginners and experienced travellers alike. Find out how to choose a route, what to take, how to take care of acclimatisation and safety on the trail.
Can I go to the Himalayas if I have no experience in high mountains?
No high-mountain experience is necessary to go to the Himalayas! Many of the Himalayan treks we offer are accessible to people with no high mountain experience. To go on a trekking peak that is above 6,000 metres, it is recommended to test your body at high altitude beforehand. If you have never had the opportunity to do so, but are in very good physical condition, together with acclimatisation trekking, even such a challenge is possible without previous experience in high mountains.
We, on the other hand, suggest step-by-step tactics. Of course, every expedition requires preparation. It is essential. Here are some tips:
-
Regular physical activity is essential.
-
About three months before the trip, it is worth taking care of the condition much more by putting in extra preparation.
-
The more difficult the expedition you are planning, the more intensive the preparations should be.
We would also add that certain illnesses or bodily indispositions will often not be an obstacle to realising your Himalayan dreams. Of course, you should always consult your plans with more experienced people and, if illnesses are present, your doctor!
I dream of an adventure in the Himalayas, but I don't know if I can manage it.
It is natural that you may wonder if you are sufficiently prepared for an adventure in the Himalayas. Doubts are good, you need to verify them with more experienced people and prepare strategies to solve possible challenges.
In our experience, good preparation, prudence and following the Guide's advice usually guarantee the success of an expedition. When you decide to travel with us, you will receive tips on how best to prepare for your trip. If you take them seriously, you need have no worries.
What preparation is necessary?
-
If you are a fairly physically fit person, i.e. physical activity is present in your life on a regular basis, you can benefit from virtually any trekking1.
-
The more difficult the expedition you choose, the more intensive the preparation should be1.
-
It is a good idea to reinforce your preparation with more intensive training/physical activity about 2-3 months before the expedition15.
This approach will allow you to enjoy the adventure to the full. It is worth bearing in mind a few key aspects:
-
Start with regular walks, gradually increasing the distance and difficulty of the terrain1.
-
Train in the trekking shoes you'll take on your expedition1.
-
Practice walking up stairs, which will prepare you well for hiking in the mountains1.
If you have any doubts as to whether an expedition will be suitable for you - please contact us, we will help you assess this individually and give you suggestions on how to make your dream possible.
Which trek is the best to start with?
Indeed, there is no definitive answer to the question of the best trek for beginners in the Himalayas. The choice depends on many individual factors such as experience, physical condition, health and available time.
For those with no high mountain experience looking for an easy trek, consider the following routes:
-
Langtang Trekking
-
Poon Hill
-
Mardi Himal
These trails are considered undemanding and accessible to beginners. For example, the Mardi Himal trek is classified as easy.
However, as has rightly been pointed out, there is no contraindication to starting your Himalayan adventure with more challenging routes such as:
-
Trekking to Everest base camp
-
Trekking around Annapurna
- Trekking Around Manaslu
It is worth noting that the trek to Everest Base Camp is considered one of the easiest routes in the Himalayas7. However, it is crucial to choose a programme that ensures adequate acclimatisation.
Whatever route you choose, it is important to prepare properly. It is advisable to start training at least 6 months before the trip, focusing on aerobic sports and training 2-3 times a week1. It is also worth considering a few trips to the lower mountains before heading to Nepal.
Remember that trekking in the Himalayas, while not technically always difficult, is often challenging due to altitude and weather conditions5. It is therefore crucial to adapt the route to one's own capabilities and to prepare accordingly.
I want to go trekking summit, however, I don't know if I can do it. What can you advise?
Trekking peaks in the Himalayas is a popular choice for people who have already experienced trekking in the region and are looking for a greater challenge. They are also attractive to those in very good physical condition who want to test their abilities before planning an expedition to higher peaks.
Here is some key information on trekking peaks:
-
Level of difficulty: Some trekking peaks, such as Island Peak (6189m), are considered some of the easiest technical 6,000m peaks in the Himalayas.
-
Physical requirements: Very good physical condition and mental strength are required. The challenge is mainly the altitude reached and the difficulty of the trail.
-
Experience: Previous mountain hiking experience is recommended, although not absolutely necessary.
-
Preparation: It is advisable to start preparing at least six months before the expedition, focusing on aerobic sports and training 2-3 times a week.
-
Acclimatisation: proper planning of the route is key to ensure proper acclimatisation.
-
Support: experienced mountain guides are provided during the expedition.
If you are wondering whether such an expedition is right for you, it is worth consulting experienced guides. They can assess your capabilities based on your mountain experience and goals. Remember that your own conviction about your readiness for such an expedition is also an important factor.

I have a chronic illness, does this exclude me from taking part in a Himalayan trek?
Your approach to health issues before travelling to the high mountains is very sensible. Consulting your doctor is key, especially if you have an existing medical condition. Here are some important points:
-
Diseases that may or may not constitute a contraindication to the expedition must, however, be confirmed by a specialist doctor:
-
Cardiovascular conditions (e.g. coronary artery disease, hypertension, heart failure)
-
Respiratory diseases (e.g. bronchial asthma)
-
Certain blood diseases
-
Untreated hypothyroidism
-
-
Many illnesses, if well controlled, do not preclude travel to the high mountains.
-
It is crucial to inform the organisers of the expedition of your health condition, so that you can prepare and adapt your itinerary accordingly, as well as act appropriately if problems arise.
-
In the case of chronic diseases, it is important:
-
Taking sufficient medication
-
Knowledge of symptoms of deterioration
-
Having an action plan in case of an increase in symptoms
- Insurance extended to cover the consequences/acerbation of chronic diseases
-
-
Acclimatisation is crucial for everyone, but especially for those with health problems.
Remember that each case is individual and the decision to travel should be made after a thorough analysis of the condition and consultation with a specialist.
How do you act when someone in the group does not acclimatise well, does the group have to wait, does that person go back lower, what does it look like?
The safety and comfort of participants is our priority. Here is a summary of our approach:
-
Intimate groups:
-
Avoiding large groups (15+ people)
-
Reducing potential risks associated with large groups
-
-
Additional support:
-
For groups of more than 5 people, there is always an additional guide
-
This ensures better care and adaptability to participants' needs
-
-
Flexibility in case of acclimatisation problems:
-
Possibility to divide the group into smaller teams
-
Adaptation of the programme to the abilities of participants with difficulties
-
-
Continuous care:
-
Guarantee that no participant will be left alone
-
Support whatever the situation or difficulty
-
This approach provides participants with a sense of security and individual treatment, which is extremely important during demanding high mountain expeditions.
