Not because it\u2019s an alternative to something better \u2014 but because it\u2019s a world of its own, with its own logic, atmosphere and culture. If you\u2019re planning a trip to Nepal in June or July, this is the place for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is Upper Mustang?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang is the former kingdom of Lo, which was historically independent of Nepal until 1795 and has strong Tibetan roots. For several decades after 1950, the region was completely closed to foreigners \u2014 it was not opened to tourists until 1992, and even then with restrictions that remain in place to this day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The landscape is radically different from what most people imagine when they hear the word \u201eNepal\u201d: a plateau at an altitude of 3,500\u20134,200 metres above sea level, dry canyons in shades of red and ochre, white villages with distinctive architecture, Buddhist monasteries dating back hundreds of years, and Lo Manthang \u2014 a walled town, the capital of a former kingdom, which is still inhabited today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These aren\u2019t the green Himalayas. The main ridge of the Himalayas blocks the moist air masses flowing in from the south. Upper Mustang lies beyond this ridge \u2014 in an area where the monsoon has very little impact.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Specific figures: whilst Pokhara records as much as 1,000\u20131,200 mm of rainfall per month in July, Upper Mustang receives around 200\u2013300 mm throughout the year. June and July are the best months for hiking here \u2014 sunny mornings, breezy afternoons, with temperatures between 10 and 25\u00b0C during the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this means that whilst all the classic routes are shrouded in clouds and mud, Upper Mustang is dry, open and accessible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Formalities \u2013 what you need to know before you leave<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang is a restricted area. Required documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Restricted Area Permit (RAP) \u2013 <\/strong>\u00a0one of the more expensive permits in Nepal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>ACAP (Annapurna Conservation Area Permit):<\/strong> approx. 30 USD<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>TIMS card:<\/strong> approx. 20 USD<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Important:<\/strong> A permit for Upper Mustang can only be obtained through a licensed Nepalese trekking agency \u2014 it is not possible to purchase one independently. This means that independent trekking without an agency is not possible here. This is important information for anyone planning a solo trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The permit covers a specific area and dates \u2014 it cannot be extended on the spot, but only in advance by the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The route \u2013 what is the Upper Mustang Trek like?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The standard route takes 10\u201314 days and runs from Jomsom to Lo Manthang and back \u2014 or, as an alternative, as a circular route via Ghami and Tsarang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Starting point:<\/strong> Jomsom (2,720 m above sea level) \u2014 accessible by flight from Pokhara (approx. 20 minutes) or by road via the Mustang Highway (6\u20138 hours, partly tarmac-surfaced road)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Indicative timetable:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Day 1:<\/strong> Jomsom \u2192 Kagbeni (2,810 m) \u2014 the gateway to Upper Mustang, the last point where no special permit is required. Documents are checked here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Day 2:<\/strong> Kagbeni \u2192 Chele (3,050 m) \u2014 the first few hours in a secluded kingdom. The landscape changes dramatically \u2014 green fields give way to arid canyons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Day 3:<\/strong> Chele \u2192 Syangboche (3,800 m) \u2014 a more challenging day involving an ascent over the Taklam La pass (3,624 m).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Day 4:<\/strong> Syangboche \u2192 Ghami (3,520 m) \u2014 via Nyi La Pass (4,010 m), white villages, prayer walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Day 5:<\/strong> Ghami \u2192 Tsarang (3,620 m) \u2014 you\u2019ll pass one of the largest monasteries in the region, an old castle and the distinctive architecture of the Lo Valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Days 6\u20137:<\/strong> Tsarang \u2192 Lo Manthang (3,840 m) and exploration \u2014 a walled town with the Jampa Lhakhang and Thubchen monasteries, the King of Lo\u2019s palace, and narrow streets. A full day\u2019s sightseeing is the minimum required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Days 8\u201310:<\/strong> Return to Jomsom (via Chhoser and the Sky Caves, or along the same route)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Landscape and culture \u2013 what to expect<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang is one of the few places in the world where Tibetan culture has survived in almost unchanged form. Nepal has never fully integrated this part of its territory \u2014 Lo Manthang retained its own royal dynasty for a long time (the last king, Jigme Parbal Bista, formally abdicated in 2008 following the abolition of the monarchy in Nepal).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What you\u2019ll see:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lo Manthang<\/strong> \u2014 one of the few surviving walled towns in the Himalayas, inhabited since the 14th century<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Sky Caves (Chhoser)<\/strong> \u2014 carved into the cliff faces thousands of years ago; some contain mummies and manuscripts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sakya monasteries<\/strong> \u2014 a Buddhist tradition that differs from that of the rest of Nepal, with its distinctive red, white and black murals<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Walls of Mani<\/strong> \u2014 kilometre-long rows of stones carved with mantras, leading through the villages<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The population of Lo-pa<\/strong> \u2014 who speaks a Tibetan dialect and practises traditional farming in extreme conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Important note: some sites (monasteries, the palace) charge an additional admission fee. Here are a few things that set it apart from a typical trek:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Wind<\/strong> \u2014 that\u2019s the main challenge. The wind blows strongly, particularly in the afternoons, and is very strong along the valleys. It\u2019s best to plan to set off early in the morning, before 8.00.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dust<\/strong> \u2014 Dry terrain and wind generate large amounts of dust. A face mask or buff is a must-have.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Sun and UV<\/strong> \u2014 At altitudes of 3,500\u20134,000 metres, UV radiation is intense, particularly when it\u2019s cloudless. Use sun cream with SPF 50+, sunglasses with UV protection and a hat.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Temperature<\/strong> \u2014 15\u201325\u00b0C during the day; at night, temperatures can drop to 0\u20135\u00b0C, even in summer. You\u2019ll need a sleeping bag and a warm jacket for the evenings.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Hydration<\/strong> \u2014 Dry air dehydrates you more quickly than humid air. Drink more than you think you need.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s far more than just Poon Hill or Langtang, but Upper Mustang offers a whole new level of experience \u2014 and is one of the few regions where the summer season offers a real advantage rather than a compromise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Upper Mustang a good choice for a first trek?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, with some reservations. The route isn\u2019t technically difficult \u2014 it\u2019s a hike, not a climb. However, it does require:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>good physical condition for a multi-day hike with significant elevation gain<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>mental resilience in the face of harsher, open terrain without the shelter of the forest<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>flexibility \u2014 wind, dust and cold nights are part of everyday life, not the exception<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the realisation that this is a different Nepal from the one in the photos of Everest<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For someone who is deliberately seeking a contrast in culture and landscape rather than classic Himalayan views, this might be the top choice. For someone who wants to experience \u201etypical Nepal\u201d, it\u2019s better to start with Poon Hill or Langtang.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The most common mistakes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Arrival without knowing about the rain shadow<\/strong> \u2014 someone goes to Upper Mustang simply because it\u2019s raining elsewhere, and is disappointed by the barren landscape devoid of greenery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Budget underestimation<\/strong> \u2014 The permit takes people by surprise if they haven\u2019t checked the formalities in advance<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>No cash<\/strong> \u2014 There are no more cash machines after Jomsom. You\u2019ll need to carry enough rupees with you for the whole trek<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Underestimating the wind<\/strong> \u2014 the afternoon winds are much stronger than on other routes and may make walking difficult<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The schedule is too tight<\/strong> \u2014 Flights to Jomsom are prone to weather-related delays; without a buffer, the whole schedule falls apart<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is it possible to travel to Upper Mustang independently?<\/strong> No \u2014 the permit is available only through a licensed agency, which is responsible for the group. A guide is compulsory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is Lo Manthang worth a visit?<\/strong> Absolutely. It\u2019s one of the most extraordinary places in the whole of Nepal \u2014 a walled city that has been inhabited for over 600 years, with active monasteries and streets that feel like walking through a living open-air museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What is the best month to visit Upper Mustang?<\/strong> Spring, autumn, but also summer\u2014in late spring, summer and early autumn, it will be dry and sunny here, and in summer there are few tourists and prices are lower than in peak season. May and September are good months, but at that time Upper Mustang faces competition from many other open routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is it possible to fly to Jomsom instead of travelling by road?<\/strong> Yes, and it\u2019s definitely worth it. The flight from Pokhara takes about 20 minutes and saves you a few hours\u2019 drive along a mountain road. Flights are sometimes cancelled due to the weather \u2014 it\u2019s worth allowing a day\u2019s buffer in Pokhara.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang isn\u2019t just a Plan B for the monsoon.
