But it does require a different approach to a spring or autumn trip. The monsoon doesn\u2019t shut Nepal down \u2014 it changes the rules of the game. If you\u2019ve got holiday time in the summer and Nepal is your destination, this article will explain where to go, what to expect and how to prepare so that your summer in the Himalayas is worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is the monsoon in Nepal, and when does it last?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monsoon is a rainy season driven by moist air masses from the Indian Ocean. In Nepal, it usually lasts from mid-June to mid-September, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in July and August.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What does this mean in practice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>regular, often heavy rainfall \u2014 usually in the afternoon and at night<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>high air humidity (70\u201390%)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>limited visibility \u2014 clouds obscure the peaks for most of the day<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the risk of landslides and roads being washed away, particularly in mountain valleys<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>fewer hikers on the trails \u2014 popular routes are noticeably quieter and less busy<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lusher greenery, waterfalls, vibrant colours \u2014 Nepal looks completely different to how it does in autumn<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monsoon is not uniform. The regions lying beyond this barrier \u2014 to the north of the main ridges \u2014 receive significantly less rainfall. This is known as the rain shadow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice, this means that whilst it rains every day in Kathmandu and on the Annapurna trails, regions such as Upper Mustang, Dolpo and Manang have conditions similar to those of a dry, high-altitude steppe. It is precisely there that Himalayan trekking makes sense in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where should you go in Nepal in the summer?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Upper Mustang \u2013 the best option during the monsoon<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang is the former kingdom of Lo, cut off from the rest of Nepal by the main Himalayan range. The landscape resembles that of Tibet \u2014 arid, plateau-like, with distinctive rock formations and a deeply rooted Tibetan culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rainfall during the monsoon:<\/strong> minimum \u2014 approx. 200\u2013300 mm per year (by way of comparison, Pokhara can receive 1,000+ mm per month in summer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Height:<\/strong> The route runs mainly between 3,500 and 4,200 metres above sea level, with its highest point at Lo Manthang (3,840 metres)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Length:<\/strong> 10\u201314 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Important information:<\/strong> Upper Mustang is a restricted area \u2014 a special permit (Restricted Area Permit) is required<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>How to get there:<\/strong> a flight or drive to Jomsom, then a walk or jeep ride to Lo Manthang<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upper Mustang is one of those places that\u2019s best visited in summer\u2014fewer tourists than in the peak season, lower prices, and a more intimate atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dolpo \u2013 for more experienced trekkers<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dolpo is one of the most remote regions of Nepal, and also lies in the rain shadow. It is characterised by its unique cultural heritage (Bon, Tibetan Buddhism) and rugged landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Lower Dolpo:<\/strong> With less restrictive access, the Phoksundo Lake trek is one of the most beautiful in Nepal<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Upper Dolpo:<\/strong> restricted area permit, an area for experienced trekkers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Season:<\/strong> June\u2013September is actually a good time to visit here<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Please note:<\/strong> Logistics are more challenging here than in Mustang \u2014 there\u2019s less infrastructure, the routes are longer, and you\u2019ll need camping kit for Upper Dolpo<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manang and the surrounding area (with some reservations)<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Manang (3,519 m), situated beyond the Thorong La pass in the Annapurna region, is partially sheltered from the monsoon rains. It is not as dry as Mustang, but the conditions are considerably better than on the lower sections of the Annapurna Circuit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trekking the Annapurna Circuit in summer is possible, although it should be noted that the sections below Manang (particularly around Besisahar and Chame) may be wet and muddy. The route above Manang is in better condition. The Thorong La Pass (5,416 m) is sometimes closed in summer due to snow and weather conditions \u2014 you should check the conditions regularly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What NOT to plan for the summer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The following routes are strongly discouraged between June and August:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Everest Base Camp<\/strong> \u2014 The monsoon is hitting hard here; the rice terraces are flooded, and the waterfalls are raging<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cultural Nepal<\/strong> \u2014 Kathmandu and Pokhara operate as normal in the summer; it\u2019s a good time to explore the temples, museums and local culture without the monsoon-related restrictions on trekking<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to pack for a trek during the monsoon season<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moisture is the main challenge here \u2014 not just the rain falling from above, but also the damp air, wet trails and the difficulty in drying things out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>An absolute must-have:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Rain cover for a rucksack<\/strong> \u2014 not an option, a fundamental requirement<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Dry bags<\/strong> Inside the rucksack \u2014 electronics, documents and a change of dry clothes must be securely packed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rain jacket<\/strong> with a membrane (Gore-Tex or similar) \u2014 a thin cape isn\u2019t enough<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Rain gaiters<\/strong> \u2014 Trousers that are wet from mid-calf down are the norm on monsoon trails<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shoes with a quick-drying lining<\/strong> or waterproof \u2014 and accepting that they\u2019ll get wet<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Spare socks<\/strong> in a dry bag \u2014 at least 2\u20133 pairs more than usual<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>What to leave at home:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cotton clothes (they don\u2019t dry out; they absorb moisture)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>materials that are difficult to dry<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>excessive cloud cover \u2014 the moist air makes it warm even at high altitudes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leeches \u2013 a topic that many people avoid<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On wooded trails below 3,000 metres above sea level, you may come across land leeches during the monsoon season. They are small, quick and almost imperceptible when they bite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How to protect yourself: closed-toe shoes, long socks tucked into your trousers, insect repellent on your shoes and gaiters. The bite is painless and harmless, but not particularly pleasant. On trails in the rain shadow (Mustang, Dolpo), leeches are not a problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Logistics \u2013 what to watch out for in summer<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Access roads<\/strong> \u2014 particularly in mountainous areas, where the route may be blocked by landslides. Travelling to Jomsom (Upper Mustang) by air from Pokhara is safer than travelling by road<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Domestic flights<\/strong> \u2014 Monsoon clouds are causing delays and cancellations, particularly on flights to Lukla and Jomsom. In summer, it\u2019s even more important than usual to allow plenty of time<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Insurance<\/strong> \u2014 Helicopter rescue is always important, and even more so in summer, as ground-based evacuation can be more difficult<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FAQ<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is it possible to travel to Nepal in June?<\/strong> Yes, if you choose an area on the leeward side. June is still relatively mild \u2014 the monsoon is only just getting into full swing. Upper Mustang in June is one of the best choices of the whole year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is July worse than June?<\/strong> July and August mark the peak of the monsoon season \u2014 heavier rainfall and a higher risk on the classic routes. In areas sheltered from the rain, the difference is less pronounced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is Nepal cheaper in the summer?<\/strong> Generally speaking, yes \u2014 hotels, some domestic flights and travel agency services can be cheaper. The permit for Upper Mustang remains expensive regardless of the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is it worth visiting Kathmandu in the summer?<\/strong> Kathmandu is a bustling city all year round. It does rain, but it doesn\u2019t bring the city to a standstill. It\u2019s a good time to visit the historic sites, temples and cultural attractions without the peak-season crowds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Is the monsoon dangerous?<\/strong> The monsoon increases the risk of landslides and washed-out trails, particularly in regions with heavy rainfall. In areas sheltered from the rain, the risk is significantly lower. Good insurance and a flexible plan \u2013 but above all, caution \u2013 are essential.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Summary<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The monsoon doesn\u2019t rule out Nepal \u2014 poor planning does. If you\u2019re on holiday in the summer and keen to go trekking, Upper Mustang is one of the best choices all year round: dry, culturally unique and free from crowds. Dolpo, for more experienced trekkers, offers a similar experience in even more remote terrain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s best to book the classic treks \u2014 Everest, Annapurna, Langtang \u2014 in spring or autumn.
