The body usually copes without any special precautions, provided you do not push yourself too hard.

On Mardi Himal (4,500 m) the situation is different. A difference of 1,300 m makes a real difference to the body. Headaches, insomnia and general fatigue are common at higher altitudes — particularly if you’re walking too fast. Your plan should allow for at least one day of a slower ascent or rest before tackling the upper section of the trail.

Which route to choose – a quick decision-making guide

Choose Poon Hill if:

This is your first trek in Nepal and you want to minimise the risks

You have 4–5 days and limited time

you prefer predictability to adventure

Fitness levels are basic or unknown in mountainous terrain

Choose the Mardi Himal if:

You have a good level of fitness and are looking for a greater challenge

Do the crowds on the trail annoy you?

You want to experience the mountains, not just look at them

you have 6–8 days and prefer more intimate places

You can choose both — It’s a very good strategy for two trips. Poon Hill as a first test run in Nepal, and Mardi Himal as the next step up on a subsequent visit.

FAQ

Is the Mardi Himal safe for someone with no experience? At a leisurely pace and provided you’re in at least reasonably good shape — yes. The key is not to rush on the steeper sections and to listen to your body. A guide is more useful on this route than on Poon Hill.

Is there Wi-Fi and charging facilities on both routes? On Poon Hill — practically everywhere. On Mardi Himal — available, but the higher you go, the less reliable it is. A power bank is a must-have.

Is it possible to combine both routes into a single trip? Technically, yes, but that’s 10–12 days of intense walking and requires much better fitness. For most beginners, it’s better to do one route properly than to take two shortcuts.

When is the best time of year? For both routes: March–May and September–November. In winter, the higher reaches of the Mardi Himal may be covered in snow.

Do you need to book tea houses in advance? On Poon Hill during the high season — definitely worth it, especially in Ghorepani. On the Mardi Himal — less essential, but it won’t do any harm either.

Summary

Poon Hill and Mardi Himal are two different experiences, not two versions of the same thing. Poon Hill offers certainty, a classic experience and sweeping panoramic views. Mardi Himal offers proximity to the mountains, tranquillity and a more demanding challenge.

There’s no wrong answer — there’s only an answer that suits you or doesn’t.
