The country is now safe and ready to welcome visitors, although it is important to be honest about the situation: some of the public and tourist infrastructure in the capital has been damaged, and the reconstruction process will take time.

Protests and their consequences

8–9 September 2025. Violent protests broke out in Nepal, led by the so-called „Gen-Z” generation. The demonstrations were a reaction to corruption, social inequality and the government’s temporary restrictions on social media, although it is worth noting that the restrictions on access to social media were more of a trigger for the protests than the actual cause of the unrest.

More than 70 people were killed in the clashes, and hundreds were injured. Part of the public infrastructure, including government buildings, and several dozen tourism-related facilities were destroyed. Losses to the sector are estimated at around 25 billion Nepalese rupees.

Despite the difficulties, the tourism sector began its recovery very quickly and returned to normal operations.

Political stabilisation and the new authorities

On 12 September 2025, Sushila Karki was sworn in as the first woman in Nepal’s history to hold the office of Prime Minister. The new interim government has committed to implementing reforms, enhancing transparency and creating a favourable environment for tourism. Parliament has been dissolved and elections have been called for 5 March 2026, which further stabilises the political situation.

The current state of tourism

At present, the situation in the country is calm and stable, and the tourism sector is operating as normal.

International and domestic flights are operating without disruption.

Most hotels in the capital and in the mountainous regions are operating as normal, although some establishments in Kathmandu are in need of reconstruction.

The trekking trails are open and safe.

Road transport is operating as normal.

Social media has been unblocked and communication is proceeding without hindrance.

Importantly, both Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), as well as Nepal Tourism Board (NTB) they officially emphasise that Nepal is safe and ready to welcome tourists. The statements issued by both institutions included assurances that the main trekking destinations and cultural sites are operating as normal, and that visitors from abroad are welcome.

TAAN also expressed its solidarity with those affected during the protests, but at the same time emphasised that local communities are looking forward to welcoming tourists and are ready to provide services of the highest standard. The NTB, for its part, emphasised that the authorities’ priority is to maintain stability and security throughout the country.

Why is now a good time to visit Nepal?

1. Stability and security

The social and political situation has stabilised. For travellers, this means that trekking in the Himalayas and travelling around the country are safe.

2. An authentic experience and hospitality

Despite the difficult circumstances, the people of Nepal welcome tourists with great warmth. This is an opportunity to get to know the country at a time when local communities particularly appreciate the presence of visitors.

3. Reflection and responsible tourism

A trip to Nepal at this time is not just an adventure in the Himalayas. It is also an opportunity to to see a country in the process of reconstruction, to gain a better understanding of its social challenges and provide tangible support for the local economy.

4. The best season for trekking and expeditions in the Himalayas

Autumn is the perfect time for trekking in the Himalayas – stable weather, clear skies and spectacular views of snow-capped peaks make September and October a special time to travel.

Summary

Following the protests in September, Nepal has faced new challenges, but also an opportunity for renewal. Travelling is safe, the tourism industry is operating as normal, and the mountains, valleys and local communities are waiting to welcome visitors.

It is worth bearing in mind that some buildings in Kathmandu have been damaged and need to be rebuilt – this is a moment to reflect on just how fragile social stability can be and how important solidarity is.

Today, Nepal welcomes tourists from all over the world, not only to admire the majestic Himalayas, but also to become part of the story of this extraordinary country’s reconstruction and hope.

Following the protests in September, Nepal has regained stability and is safe for tourists.
