Lumbini<\/strong>, the birthplace of Prince Siddhartha Gautama, who later became Shakyamuni Buddha, is situated to the south of Kathmandu. He was born there in 560 BC, and according to Buddhist sutras, Queen Maya Devi gave birth to him whilst travelling. Lumbini has been a centre of pilgrimage since the 3rd century BC, and in 1997 it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. In 2013, traces of the oldest Buddhist temple, dating from the 6th century BC, were discovered there, standing on the site of the Buddha\u2019s birth.<\/p>\n

Kathmandu: The Spiritual and Cultural Capital of Nepal<\/h4>\n
